Brazil implements new hygiene testing standards for imported seafood products

In order to strengthen the testing of imported food at the country's borders, the Brazilian government has specially formulated a set of hygiene standard models for imported fish, which also applies to other imported foods. This standard has been implemented since the beginning of this year. The Brazilian Department of Animal Products Inspection (DIPOA), the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA), and the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries have jointly developed new standards.

The Director of the Brazilian Department of Animal Products Inspection (DIPOA) stated that it is necessary to implement new testing standards for imported seafood products. Since the implementation of new testing measures on January 1st this year, more than 60 containers of seafood imported through Itayai Port and Suapu Port have been found to not meet the new hygiene testing standards.

The Brazilian Lawyers Union (AGU) stated that the government's adoption of new hygiene testing standards can protect the health of the public and animals, and prevent diseased foods from entering the Brazilian market. For container goods that do not meet the entry hygiene standards, Brazilian customs will return the goods intact to the origin.

The new health testing standards implemented by the Brazilian government are fully based on CodexAlimentarius, which will protect consumers, the fishing import industry, fishing associations, and businesses.
